blind wonderworld
If you pitty Donovan because he can't see all the beautiful things in this world then ask yourself: have you ever read a book and were dissappointed by the movie about it? This is because your imagination is far more then anything you could see with just your eyes. No movie ever could be as vivid and as magical as

your fantasy creates the words you read in your mind. And when you were a child... didn't you love it when your mother read you a story and you felt like you were part of this world even though you were just laying in your bed... this is the world, Donovan lives in. The world of imagination. His blind wonderworld.
What would you do if a gigantic beast would appear in front of you; thrice the sice of you, with big, sharp teeth? You'd be scared and run away. Well, that's about the same situation when Donovan met the dogs but he wasn't scared. not a single second. He couldn't see the big animal of another species. But he wasn't confused by the different body language nor frightened by their looks. He just used his heart to see them and all he felt was love and sympathy. The dogs and Donovan became friends instantly. Megumi, the Akita even seems to know that he's special and bonded deeply with him (read more about Donovan and the dogs here).
You may have cats in mind enjoying to look out the window, wishing to hunt those birds. Donovan 'looks' outside the window too but his world doesn't end at those houses or forest. His world reaches as far as his imagination does; he might even be able to touch the stars he loves so much.
Sometimes he sits at the window, moving his head up and down, left and right as if he could see something. I catch myself thinking that he might be able to see again but there's nothing of interest outside and my other cat already left the window because of it. But not so Donovan. He feels the fresh air, the wind, he has different scents in his nose and hears all these noises. Like a child can be the superhero when it puts on a towel as a cape, Donovan sees an endless world of wonders and follows with his eye the insects and birds his mind created.
Maybe he even sees some faires ;D that at least would explain why he chirps happily when he's done watching and jumps away in joyful leaps.
