I adopted Donovan not knowing he's disabled. Neither did I know about his blindness nor his epilepsy. I'm very grateful I didn't because as I wanted him to be a perfectly matching playmate for my existing cat Giuliano, I'm not sure if I would've chosen Donovan. I never owned or even saw a blind cat before and I might've thought that he couldn't play with other cats properly. Doubts, ignorance, pity. All these probably would've prevented me from adopting this angel that's not just the perfect friend for my other cat but also a blessing for not just me but also many people all around the world that find inspiration and happiness in his joyful, life-affirming personality and daily little adventures.

So don't let a disability hold you off from adopting a pet but also don't let it be the reason to adopt them. What I mean by this?

If you just saw a disabled cat online and think it's cool or fun entertainment, please don't get it. Animals deserve our respect, they don't exist for our enjoyment. And while many or even most special needs are surprisingly easy to take care of, they need some kind of special treatment or medication, not to mention at least basic knowledge about cat language and behaviour.

If you on the other hand are aware of the needs of a pet and just hesitate to adopt a special needs, thinking it might be too much work or a burden, please don't. Most are like any other pet with just
